Southsea’s oldest sandwich shop is Southsea’s newest addition! André’s Food Bar opens on Osborne Road.

André’s Food Bar opened its doors to an expectant and hungry crowd of local friends and well wishers at its launch on Saturday 23rd January. André’s Food Bar is the newly-renovated 2016 version of Southsea’s much-loved and trusted La Croissanterie – the green and cream sandwich shop that’s been baking baguettes in Osborne Road for nearly three decades.

As Southsea’s oldest independent sandwich shop, it’s been the place to go to grab a tasty, fresh baguette when on the go, for 27 years. It’s a family business, run by the Guedeneys, that’s been keeping city residents fed with filled baguettes, croissants and delicious patisserie items since 1988. They are especially proud of their distinctive French baguettes baked on site, which they supply to some of Portsmouth’s best restaurants daily.

André is the family’s eldest son and he has worked in the business since he could barely see over the counter, so it’s safe to say he knows his bagels from his baguettes! André, 35, has taken over the business from his mother Kathleen and he intends to bring in fresh and creative ideas gleaned from his family’s French roots and his European travels.

His first undertaking was an exciting freshen up for 2016; a new-look shop and new name. Work has been under way since December and just over a month on, André and his team are delighted to be welcoming customers through their door.

The interior of the shop has been stripped back and the old décor has been replaced by a mix of exposed brick, distressed wood panelling and rectangular white tiles. Glass counters, fisherman’s lamps and modern menu boards breathe new life into the place.  Externally, the black and white frontage is striking and on trend.

André said “I’m thrilled to be leading the business into 2016. We’ve tweaked our menu, but don’t fret – we’ve listened to the views of our loyal customers who told us what they love about us and what they’d like to see us offer. We’ve kept all the good stuff like our famous garlic chicken baguettes, homemade mayonnaise and vinaigrette and freshly baked croissants.

We’ve introduced added extras including a range of healthy, create-your-own salads and a new selection of snacks and treats. Whether you want a naughty nibble with your morning coffee, or something on the side with one of our freshly-baked baguettes, then we’ve got it covered. Best of all, we’re serving simple, fuss-free, fresh food while you wait, made just the way you want it”.

André’s Food Bar, located at 54, Osborne Road, Southsea, is open Monday to Saturday 8am to 3pm.
